Javelina, or white collared peccary. They look like wild pigs. They are related to wild boar, but not closely. Their next closest relative is the hippo. They often live and travel in packs called squadrons, like this.
A few weeks back, there
was one in our yard when we were at Falcon State Park, and I pointed out bumps on the snout that indicate where
the tusks are.
The bumps are kind of
subtle.
But the tusks are
not. This is what they look like when
they’re exposed.
(Definitely not my photo.)
Javelina aren’t naturally
aggressively toward humans, but you wouldn’t want to try to tackle one. They can do significant damage to other
critters they might be in competition with for food or space, or if they feel
threatened.
