We had an unexpected result from our last test, but that was before we got the injection system fixed. We’ve run another 5th gear vs 6th gear test, as much as we could, driving from St Vrain to Chatfield back to Longmont. Smooth fast road; I set the cruise control on 65. Slightly rolling terrain, so I alternated 5th gear and 6th gear tracking every 5 miles to make sure any hills got included in each sample. 70 miles of test-time in all. 35 miles each.
The result, 0.2 MPG better fuel economy in 6th gear than in 5th. Too small a difference to be significant with that small a sample. What happened?
Last time, we were testing the fuel usage while there was a defect with the injection. At low RPM under load the engine shuddered. It could be that shudder was costing us 1 MPG!
