It
was a quiet morning until the moose staggered through our campsite followed by
an escort of park rangers. The young guy made it through the pondside
willows and fell into the lake.
We
think the moose came from the area around Lyons, about 20 miles to the west
northwest of here. He had been in the park for a couple days, and was
just too close to the interstate highway for comfort, so they darted him.
The tranquilization didn’t go exactly as planned because the moose made it to
the water and had to be rescued while unconscious. They hauled him back
to the shoreline and got him on a tarp.
They
relocated the moose and tarp, first back to our campsite,
then
into a horse trailer,
where
he was left to wake up on his own
When
he was awake and standing
they
hauled him off and released him in the hills west of Boulder.
