Unless
found guilty in a court of law. Sounds great, doesn’t it. The great
American legal motto. We’ve heard it all our lives.
Judy
and I recently watched a television program that reminded us over and over that
the suspect, who was being held in jail without bond, was presumed innocent
because he hadn’t been to trial yet. And that made me think. If I
were in a situation where I was presumed innocent, I would expect to be a free
man. That man being held without bail seemed to be presumed guilty to
me. I’m not lobbying for his release, but that’s what jail without bail
would feel like. Presumed guilty.
