We came upon a charming river ferry across the Willamette.
It is self-propelled, but it also runs on a tether.
There are cables above and a trolley that runs along the high cables. The ferry doesn’t hang from the trolley, the cable is slack, but it is there if needed.
There is a taut cable underneath the water that guides the boat. It’s like a train on tracks, except the tracks are an underwater cable that guides the boat precisely to the ramps on each side of the river.
