From far away, I saw a ragged flag on a
really high pole. There is nothing that direction, why would there be a
flag? I walked closer.
With my binoculars I could see that the
flag had a faded green cross and 911 on it.
And a sign at the bottom.
I don’t know who put that rescue station
there, but I don’t think it was for day hikers like me. Desperate
people. Life and death deep in the scrub. A sober reminder that
there are different layers to life in the Valley.
