A 350 mile drive in the minivan

…to Houston.  With a stopover in Corpus Christi.  Jon called last night and told us about a Bar-tailed Godwit in Oso Bay.  First Texas sighting ever of a Bar-tailed Godwit.  Normally it’s an Asian, African, Indian, Australian, and New Zealand kind of bird.  It doesn’t belong in Texas at all.  We couldn’t pass that up, and found a very cooperative bird at noon, feeding with a group of Marbled Godwits relatively close to the shoreline.

Got him.  Then we finished off out trip to Houston with a stop at the Hot Bowl for dinner.  Our favorite Houston food.

My evening walk near the hotel was along a busy road paralleled by a train track.  I wasn’t surprised by the freight train in the middle of town, or the horn when it blew, until I realized that the train horn wasn’t coming from the train, it was coming from the crossing equipment at the intersection.  A horn-silent train, with the noise of a horn blowing at the perfect time for every intersection.  How about that?

We’re all getting older; some of us faster than others.  Poor Annie is having to do it at dog-speed.  The rear end isn’t keeping up with the front end so well now.  She is still a happy healthy dog, but she’s having trouble getting around.  No more jumping.  We’re about through being able to do stairs too.

We’re all here in Houston together, Judy, me, and the dogs.  We’re scheduled to pick up the motorhome tomorrow morning and all start toward home together.
