We've figured out what our next most wanted bird is. We saw the green kingfisher last January. That satisfied a several year quest.
The next most wanted is the purple martin. That one will be no challenge, though, since it is a very common and conspicuous bird. We just haven't been in the right place at the right time for it. One trip to Kansas this summer and we'll have seen hundreds. The next most wanted bird that we'll have to really work on, is the California condor. They were completely captive for a while. They are back in the wild in two or three places in California now, one in Baja, and one spot north of the Grand Canyon. Maybe on our June trip to the conference in Las Vegas, we can head home by way of Northern Arizona and lurk long enough at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument to spot one.
California Condors have a ten foot wingspan. From a distance they can be mistaken for a small plane.
