We get to walk in places where we see signs like this:
We don’t actually get to see ocelots, but we get to see suggestions that they’re around. We do see bobcats from time to time.
A big old tortoise out for a walk.
…until I disturb him by walking past.
…and other things not out for a walk.
…that used to be here.
We’re told that the grass in the front yard looks that good year-round.
It’s even green in winter. It’s plastic!

14 years old today.
…we passed an interesting road sign; one we hadn’t seen before. It read “Plows use caution”. Oh great. In the winter when roads are at their worst, they put up signs warning the snow plow drivers to be careful? What about the rest of us? These are signs we’ve never seen in snowy Colorado, so it must be *really* snowy up here in the great northeast.
We saw more than one of those signs. We detected a pattern. All the signs were located just before the road went over a bridge that had a road going underneath. The signs were warning the snow plow drivers not to create a sudden avalanche for the unsuspecting drivers below!
For those of you that remember the Louisville house, I have a photo to pass along. Diane had been out bicycling and stopped at our house for a picture.
It’s nice to see the old house looking so neat and tidy.
For those of you who don’t know the house, it was originally a two room farm house, a section house, built around 1910. It has survived a series of additions over the years, making the part to the left (you can’t see in this picture) a two story affair. Our addition (to the even farther left) was an enclosed stairway improving access to the upstairs. The house was in danger of getting torn down when we sold it, but we found a buyer who wanted to refurbish it and modernize the interior. He did. We’re glad.
When I was a kid, I learned how many days each month had by naming them in my head; knowing the starting month and every alternate one after that had 31 days each (doubling up with July and August), and the other months had 30 days or less. If I say the 31 day months a little louder in my head, I can keep track of which month I’m on and how many days it has.
Judy learned it a different way. If you make a fist with your knuckles up, you can count on them. Count the knuckles and the spaces between, doubling up on July and August as you head back the other direction. Every knuckle month has 31 days. Every in-between month doesn’t.
That’s the knuckle trick. I think her way is easier than mine.
You’re driving along listening to the news. They promo a story that is coming on “right after these commercial messages”. You want to hear the next story. You have a choice. You can listen to mind-numbing commercials repeat toll-free numbers over and over until the program returns with your story, or you can mute the radio and hope you remember to turn the sound back up in time. Muting the radio is not like muting the television; there are no visual clues to remind you to turn the volume back up.
Well, we’re not limited to these two choices anymore! We have a third option. The new car radio has a pause button like a television DVR. You can pause, drive along in silence for five minutes, then hit play, jump forward through the commercials, and listen to the story.
An excellent solution to such a problem plaguing mankind!
