Stilt Sandpipers

In the winter, from a distance, they can be difficult to tell from Dowitchers.  They both occupy the same nich.  They feed together in the same habitat.  With Stilt Sandpipers and Long-billed Dowitchers both in their winter plumage, they’re almost the same shade of gray.

As spring progresses though, the Dowitchers take on a more reddish, colorful, look.

The Silt Sandpipers stand out.
