Gladys Porter Zoo

It’s a charming little 26 acre zoo right in the middle of Brownsville.  It was built entirely by a single foundation in the early 1970s, then ownership was transferred to the city.  It was inspired by conservation efforts as much as putting animals on exhibit.  It feels different from other zoos.

Most of the enclosures are open-air and almost all include natural vegetation.  There are a few climbing structures for the gibbons and spider monkeys, but there are real trees for all of them to climb as well.
